20-22 May 2025, Bonn and Gevelsberg, Germany Having held a very successful workshop on Strategies for Large-scale Forest Restoration in Europe as part of the EU Horizon 2020 project SUPERB (Systemic solutions for upscaling of urgent ecosystem restoration for forest-related biodiversity and ecosystem services), we’re excited to share the workshop results. These are based on the discussions and input by over twenty carefully selected forest restoration policy and practice experts from fourteen countries in Europe. They came together to share their perspectives on what is needed for upscaling forest restoration and how the SUPERB outcomes can support these needs, and to build connections for collaboration that can accelerate this process. The main messages from the workshop include the value of adopting a landscape approach; negotiating synergies and trade-offs between different ecosystem services; strengthening communication among relevant state agencies and between them and restoration practice; prioritising stakeholder engagement and multi-actor collaboration; mobilising data, evidence and examples of success; and investing in education and public relations. We once again thank all the participants for the inspiring discussions! The full workshop report is available here.
