TRUSTex: Advancing Sustainable Textiles in the Circular Economy through Innovative Extended Producer Responsibility Schemes

TRUSTex is a pioneering €7.6 million European project set to revolutionise textile waste management through innovative Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes.
As the EU prepares for mandatory separate textile collection by 2025, TRUSTex brings together 19 partners across 11 countries to find solutions that wil change textile production, repair and reuse options, and textile waste management for the better. The 3-year project unites research and technology organisations, universities, NGOs, industry representatives and SMEs, to bring fresh perspectives and cross-sectoral expertise to tackle the challenge of textile waste.
The project's primary focus is to test strategies and formulate recommendations that analyse the feasibility of EPR schemes, pinpointing weaknesses, and proposing solutions. Its holistic approach will cover the pivotal EPR activities; collection, sorting, reuse, and recycling. This multifaceted strategy is designed to identify barriers within these activities, showcasing innovations that directly improve the EU industry's capacity to manage textile waste. Consequently, the project integrates eco-design of new fibres, the incorporation of Design for Disassembly technologies, and digital solutions aligned with forthcoming digital product passport and labelling regulations, to facilitate garment identification and traceability.

Prospex Institute's Role
The project's emphasis on continuous feedback and exchange with key stakeholders and end-users means that Prospex Institute has a role to play at every stage of the value chain. We will use the Prospex-CQI method to map key stakeholder categories and individuals, ensuring we reach a diverse, wide range of stakeholders through our engagement activities. We will reach industry representatives through our yearly Stakeholder Boards, designed to gain feedback on the project's ideas and recommendations. We will tackle some of the most problematic 'viability hotspots' in the value chain with our hands-on Hotspot Solution Finders, and engage with consumers through our Citizen Panels and PI E-Lab. In order to ensure the project's findings are widely engaged with and disseminated, we will hold a Replication Conference in the final year, inviting other EU projects and and key representatives from the textile sector.
